I am a firm believer in that a good sauce can save an underwhelming dish. And, a good sauce can also make a great dish ten times better. Is that a hot take?
For obvious reasons, a lot of my favourite condiments in Toronto are hot sauces or at least hot sauce adjacent. Most places will have a bottle of tabasco or sriracha, but the ones who take the time to make and batch their own? It will always impress me.
So, here is a shortlist of some tasty condiments I’ve had and thoroughly enjoyed in Toronto.
Loga’s Hot Sauce (Loga’s Corner)
This (very f**king hot) sauce is beloved by all of Loga’s loyal patrons. The momos are already unreal, but this famous hot sauce brings it up even more. The spice of this hot sauce will absolutely humble you.
Sambal (Soos)
The national condiment of Malaysia will put any of your favourite chilli crisps to shame. Soos’ sambal (available in a plant-based option as well) is a total savoury attack and I will put it on literally anything (get a jar to take home).
Garlic Aoili (Taverne Bernhardt’s)
It’s not so much the actual condiment here that rocks (although it does), but I do like its form factor when it gets to the table — just smacked on top of your fries/potatoes nonchalantly.
Mac’s Hot Honey (Mac’s Pizza)
Hot honey and a slice from Mac’s goes really, really well together. There are tons of hot honeys out there these days, but none a better match than this one.
House Hot Sauce (Masa Deli)
If you like a solid vinegary hot sauce, this one will blow you away.
Garlic Oil (Fresca)
If you walk out of Fresca with your slice not drowning in their garlic oil, I don’t think we could be friends.
Creamy Garlic Parmesan w/ Chilli Crisp (Maker Pizza)
Combining two of the best pizza condiments into one is how you beat out the rest. But, special shoutout to Badiali’s creamy pepperoncini and Blondies’ black garlic dip (RIP).
Happy Hot Sauce (Allwood Market + Cafe)
This multipurpose market and cafe offers a diverse selection of handmade goods, refined apparel pieces, vinyl listening, plant-based brunch and an unbelievable scotch bonnet hot sauce.
Chimichurri (La Bella Managua)
This beloved Nicaraguan spot is one of my favourite spots in the city for a hearty meal, and it always includes fried cheese and chimichurri.
House Mustard (Zelden’s)
A flavourful, punchy, spicy mustard at every table to dress your hot pastrami sandwich with is awesome.
Zhug (Fat Pasha)
Garlic lovers, rejoice. And bring the mints.
