There’s a general, almost communal practice of trying to eat in at home more after the turn of the new year. Whether its for establishing new healthy eating habits or allowing your wallet to recover from a heavy-spending holiday season, we all have reasons to skip out on weekly dinners at our favourite restaurants for a meal at home.
But, that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on our favourite dishes, right? Sure, we’re not skilled chefs slinging the best food at your favourite restaurant, but the new year often comes with trying something different.
We’ve gathered some dishes we’re attempting to recreate at home this year, before we inevitably end up back there ordering them again.
Pan Con Tomate from Bar Raval
A simple dish that calls for a really good piece of sourdough and some fresh tomatoes, garlic and olive oil, this one we feel pretty confident making. And, we’ll pair it with a plate of charred shishitos too.

Wedge Salad from Aloette
This one is a textural paradise. We may not nail all the ingredients, but it’s about the journey!

Cacio e Pepe from Enoteca Sociale
Comforting and simple, a recipe for success at home.

Pad Gra Pow from Pai
Get that fish sauce ready and the wok ripping hot for this one.
Chocolate Babka from Linny’s
This one may be a more complicated dish to make at home, but we’ll riot before we go a week without this babka.

Breakfast Burrito from Masa Deli
We ate a lot of these in 2024, so there’s no chance we stop now.

Tiramisu from Famiglia Baldassarre
It’s too cold to wait in line for lunch anyways. We’ll be back on Geary for this one in April.

Shrimp Toast from MIMI Chinese
Crispy, nutty, savoury bliss we’re recreating at home.

The Mediterranean Plate from Manita
We can’t get enough of this plate, so we’re bringing it home with us.

Latke Double Down from Schmaltz Appetizing
Surely a lot of us have some left over latkes, right? Here’s what we’re doing with ours.

The Special from La Salumeria
If you buy all the ingredients that go into this sandwich, you’ll be able to make a whole bunch of them throughout the week. Extra win!!

Veal Parm from Piano Piano
Crispy and cheesy goodness is all the comfort we’re looking for this winter, and nothing does it better than this Piano Piano veal parm.

Roasted Cauliflower from Fat Pasha
A contender for the best vegetable dish in the city, this garlicky and wildly colourful cauliflower is definitely worth making at home.
